Man electrocuted after attempted vandalism

A man has been electrocuted to death after allegedly attempting to vandalise a transformer in Kisumu's Orongo village.

The deceased, identified as a mechanic at a garage in the county, was yesterday morning found lying lifeless under the transformer.

Witnesses claim the man was part of a gang that has been vandalising transformers in the area.

The tools he had used to disconnect cables and a ladder were found near the electric pole while a saloon car was parked at the roadside.

Patrick Oyola, the owner of the car allegedly used in the operation, said he had taken his car for maintenance at a garage in town 10 days ago and was surprised to find it at crime scene.

Kenya Power Regional Manager Daniel Tare said incidents of transformer vandalism had increased in the area but police had not caught offenders. County Police Commandant Nelson Mugweru said a probe was underway.
