Ex-minister faults education system

Former Education minister Oloo Aringo has urged the Government to adopt skill-based education system to equip students with necessary skills for venturing into self-employment.

Speaking in Kisumu during Uwezo 2014 National Conference, Aringo accused the government of investing huge sums of money in churning out graduates who cannot contribute to the country's development.

"We should insist on productive learning and ensure that our system of education meets the needs of our children and the demands of the future," he said.

LEARNING TOOLS

Aringo said it is regrettable that many students go to universities and when they leave, some of them cannot even write an application letter to get a job.

He said there is need for rational policies to ensure integration of technical and vocational training in the country's education system to enable the country to speedily realise Vision 2030.

"The 8-4-4 system introduced in the early years has caused great devastation to the country's education system. We need to change it," he said.

The meeting comes ahead of a learning assessment scheduled for the last week of September. This exercise is expected to ensure that students produce results critical to the realisation of Vision 2030.
