Boy’s hope of joining high school dims after Wings to Fly ‘mishap’

Kisumu, Kenya: Syprian Omondi got 410 marks out of the possible 500 in last year’s KCPE exams, emerging the top candidate at Kibuye Mixed Primary School in Kisumu County.

His hopes of becoming a neurosurgeon are, however, in limbo after learning that he may not join high school due to lack of school fees.

His humble family had their hopes banked on Equity Bank’s Wings to Fly scholarship until they received shocking news last Monday.

His father Dominic Oduor, a water vendor in Kisumu, said he was informed his son, 13, was dropped from the list of beneficiaries by the Wings to Fly assessors.

“I cried because I did not believe it. My mind had been lingering about how I will report to school and what I expect to find in a national school,” said Omondi.

Scholarship

Omondi, who had qualified for the scholarship after an interview, was waiting for communication on how to prepare for his reporting at Maranda High School.

According to a fee structure signed by Maranda High School Principal Boaz Owino, Omondi is required to pay close to Sh63,000 to join the learning institution this term.
