40 arrested in major swoop on bars

Muranga, Kenya: A major operation carried out on bars and restaurants in Murang'a town resulted in the arrest of more than 40 people.

During the crackdown, 10 premises found operating against the stipulated hours were closed, while Sh200,000 was raised as court fines from the operators and revellers.

County Secretary Patrick Mukuria said operations will continue in all parts of the county following months of lawlessness connected to liquor abuse.

 RESTORE SANITY

"We are particularly interested in premises ignoring the stipulated time set by the Government. Some of the premises have been opening as early as 6am and closing after 3am," said Mr Mukuria.

Three weeks ago, Commissioner Kula Hache accused the county government of licensing hundreds of the outlets in disregard to law.

Yesterday, Mukuria said the county government has set up anti-liquor department to ensure only licensed premises operate, and raid illicit brew dens.

"We will ensure sanity returns in this town. Security officers have also been facilitated with validators to help detect liquor brands bearing fake Kenya Revenue Authority stickers," said Mukuria.
