50 suspects arrested in Lamu, Tana Delta operation

Lamu, Kenya: Fifty suspects have been arrested in connection with Saturday’s attacks in Lamu and Tana Delta Counties that left 22 people dead and several displaced.

Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo said the suspects were arrested in a two-day operation that was mounted by Kenya Defence Forces and police.

One of the suspects had a wound that police believe was of a gunshot.

“We have so far apprehended 50 suspects in connection with the attacks. They will be arraigned in court once investigations are finalised,” said Kimaiyo.

He also said leaflets were dropped in the area Monday threatening more attacks.

His revelation came as 48-hour deadline issued by Deputy President William Ruto after he toured Hindi area following Saturday night attack lapsed.

Ruto had Sunday told police to arrest suspects behind the attacks dead or alive within 48 hours.

Tuesday, Kimaiyo said the operation that is being led by Deputy Inspector General of Administration Police Samuel Arachi will continue.

KDF joined the operation on Monday.
