Rescue centre benefits from food stuff, cash rewards

NAIROBI, KENYA: MaryFaith Rescue Centre in Dagorretti is the latest beneficiary of itsbig campaign which has been making donations towards worthy causes.

It donated food stuffs, medical kits and clothing for the children in an event which is a build up to its official launch on July 10.

“We hope that this drive will draw more sponsors to the home to improve their fund raising efforts and ensure all the girls at the home get a chance to build a good life,” said a statement from the campaign team.

MaryFaith rescue Centre is a safe space for girls who have gone through various forms of abuse such as sexual harrasment, child labour, early marriage and Female Genital Mutilation. The centre takes care of children from 0-18years. The Centre began in the year 2005, by hosting the first girl in the founder’s home. The girl was rescued from relatives who wanted to marry her off at the age of 10 years, after hosting the girl for three months; three more girls were rescued requiring the founder to move to another location. With the help of a woman’s help group a house was rented for the girls and a lay to take care of them was hired.

In the nine years the centre has been able make major milestones, it has grown from just rescuing the girls, to seeking legal justice and re-integration of the girls to their families and making follow-ups after reintegration. Once a child is rescued the social worker takes her to the hospital where a medical report is obtained. The case is reported to the police station so that the case can be taken to court. Since the centre began it has been able to facilitate a total of 265 cases, 58 these have been heard in court and successfully determined, while 45 of the children have successfully been re-integrated back to their families.

Today the Centre is home to a total of 60 children and 17 women. Some of the children are school attending at Mary Faith children centre while the older ones are in high school and vocational training.

The home’s current funds drive and prayer is to collect funds for the girls’ education and health as well as land acquisition.
