A man is burning over Sh200,000 on water to quench the thirst of wild animals. Patrick Mwalua, a conservationist based at the Tsavo National Park, sources the water 60 kilometres away, a trip he makes daily to Mtito Andei.

“They have marked the time I deliver water to them. If I delay, I find them hopelessly waiting for me at the water points, wondering if I will ever show up. I empathise with them,” says the man who is spending Sh248,000 every week to deliver between 24,000litres and 36,000 litres of water every day to the animals.

Over 2,000 buffaloes, elephants, antelopes, waterbucks, zebras, birds, primates and others survive on his benevolence.

“Last week, I found about 800 buffaloes waiting for us at the pond. Our arrival was a relief full of excitement. I love seeing them roll in the mud,” he said.

The 41-year-old veterinarian has been volunteering to take care of wildlife since July 2016 — and is being assisted by friends and other donors to raise the money.

He empties the water into a pond and for the animals to drink and cool their bodies.
