China pledges to increase scholarships to public servants

The Chinese government has pledged to increase scholarships given to state employees by 1,000.

Chinese ambassador to Kenya Liu Xianfa noted that Kenya's growth was promising, adding there was need to increase the human resource capacity, especially for state officers.

"China is willing to share its expertise and knowledge with Kenya through talent, training and education in all the country's relevant sectors. Improving the human resource of state officials is one of the big steps in attaining a country's development goals," said Dr Liu.

The envoy said the scholarships, which will run until 2018, will cover various sectors including agriculture, security, public policy, infrastructure and urban planning.

About 40 Government staff (doctors and police officers) awarded scholarships are set to leave for China today.

"We also have Chinese students who will come to work in Chinese companies established in Kenya to pass their expertise to their Kenyan counterparts," said Liu.
