Omino wins coach of the month: Stima's coach collected 17 points to take home the award

Henry Omino won the Coach of the Month award after an outstanding performance by his team, Western Stima, who are currently fifth on the log. Stima were unbeaten in July when they collected eight points from a possible 12 in the four matches they played.

The award winner is voted for by sports journalists under the umbrella of the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (ASJAK).

Omino collected 17 points to beat Chemelil Sugar's Francis Baraza and Mike Mururi of Kakamega Boyz.

Mururi got 11 points while Baraza had eight. Omino becomes the fifth coach to win the award after Francis Kimanzi, Ivan Minnaert, Zedekiah Otieno and Salim Babu.

After receiving the award, the delighted coach said his side should not be underestimated.

"We have always aimed to finish in the top five positions and we are there right now even though there are still many matches to go. On the other hand, a lot can change between us and the league leaders and this makes us candidates for the title challenge," he said.

Omino is also motivated by the fact that the point difference between his side and the top teams is not too big and believes that if the leaders drop any points, he is capable of catching up.

"We have had a good run in the second leg and are determined to keep up the tempo in the remaining matches so we can finish in the highest position possible."

Elsewhere, the battle for promotion in the Nationwide Super League (NSL) went a notch higher at the weekend with some surprising results thrown up in various matches.

Bidco United caused the biggest upset after stopping Nakumatt 2-1 and with it denied the shopping giants an opportunity to go to the top of the log.

Nzoia United beat Oserian 3-1 to go to the top of the log on 44 points. They are now in pole position to be champions and make it to tier league.

The biggest match was certainly the 3-3 tie between Moyas and favourites Zoo Kericho. The results mean that Zoo remain in third spot on the log.
