Poor management the undoing of KQ

The latest fiscal report ending March 2016 from national carrier Kenya Airways leaves a lot to be desired.

According to the KQ management, the airline made a loss of Sh26.2 billion during the 2015-2016 fiscal year. Notably, during 2014-2015 fiscal year, the airline lost Sh25.7 billion.

Although the KQ management has apportioned blame to, among other things, negative travel advisories from the West, an outbreak of Ebola in West African countries and the dismal performance of the Kenya shilling against international currencies, especially the US dollar, it is an inalienable fact that the element of financial mismanagement and maladministration cannot be ruled out.

The tendency of top KQ managers to spend shareholders' money on loss-making projects as well as growing corruption have contributed greatly to the current sad state of affairs.

Those responsible for imprudent financial management should be brought to book. The buck stops with the management.
