Monsanto Fund supports farmers to improve yields

A local non-profit organization, Human Development International Organization (HDI), has partnered with Monsanto Fund, the philanthropic arm of the Monsanto Company, to support 5,000 small scale farmers in Eastern Kenya. The Monsanto Fund is dedicated to strengthening farming communities around the World and where Monsanto Company employees live and work. The key focus is on improving the nutritional and economic wellbeing of communities through increased agricultural productivity. Monsanto Company is a sustainable agriculture company and a leading global provider of technology-based solutions and agricultural products that improve farm productivity and food quality. Through this project the partnership will remain focused on enabling small-holder farmers to produce more from their land while conserving more of our world’s natural resources such as water and energy. Farmers will receive support in key inputs, trainings and marketing for Green Grams, Pigeon peas and Soya beans. HDI through its Chairman Mr. Philip Wambua said most rural small scale farmers remain in the poverty cycle because of lack of knowledge on modern farming techniques, fear of change, continuous use of traditional farming techniques and dependency on rain fed agriculture even with the serious effects of climate change and unpredictable weather patterns. Wambua commended Monsanto for aiding small scale farmers especially in the drylands of Eastern Kenya to improve incomes and economic well-being.
