Heads of schools in Murang'a and Laikipia counties have signed performance contracts to comply with a directive from the Ministry of Education. About 862 heads have signed the contracts.

County Director of Education Ibrahim Adan said the contracts are a strategy by the Government to improve education standards.

Mr Adan spoke as the local Kenya National Union of Teachers branch objected the move to subject teachers to performance contracts on grounds that the exercise might be used to intimidate them.

Murang'a North Knut Executive Secretary Rosalid Kamina said TSC was intimidating teachers to sign the contracts.
