Gor Mahia eased past Langata Gremio 3-0 in a first round match of the GOtv shield tournament played at City Stadium yesterday.
Goals from Meddie Kagere, George Odhiambo and Dirkir Glay were enough to help Gor Mahia extend their unbeaten run in local competitions.
After several attempts to get ahead, Kagere finally opened the scoring for Gor Mahia in the 13th minute. The goal came after Gor Mahia had laid siege on their opponents backline.
With every move, Gremio’s inexperience showed through many mistakes they made, especially at the back.
They should have been two goals down by the quarter hour mark but Karim Nzigiyimana failed to convert from the spot.
After that, and as the match progressed, the lower division side gained confidence, denying Gor more goals.
They went to the break trailing by just one goal from which they could possibly recover.
Gor continued to struggle in a bid to prise open their opponents’ backline as the second half kicked off. It was a frustrating attempt as the lower league side defended in numbers.
However, George ‘BlackBerry’ Odhiambo finally managed to score in the 62nd minute through a long-range effort.
After that second goal, Gremio lacked the energy to prevent more goals, allowing Glay to score a third in the 79th minute heading in from a set-piece from the right.
In an earlier match at the same venue, Police upset Kariobangi Sharks 3-2 in a first round match. The national super league side were lifted by goals from Rampei Lewis who scored a double in the 63rd and eighth minutes, and David Oluoch in the second minute. A double from Mathew Odongo in the 27th and 89th minutes was all Sharks could manage in a match they struggled to control.
After a scrappy first half, Sharks looked the more urgent side to get ahead in the second half and should have done that five minutes after resumption.
Three Sharks strikers found themselves unmarked inside the Police backline but none of them could control a free ball from the left flank as Police survived a major scare.
Then David Oluoch, scorer of the first goal for Police, nearly made it two in the 52nd minute when he collected a through ball only to shoot wide.
Sharks then rested Martin Nderitu for Moses Kamau.
At the hour mark, David Arogo was denied with a diving header.
