A Government delegation that had gone to assess the situation in warring Nadome area escaped death narrowly after they were ambushed by raiders.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Grace Kaindi, Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Osman Warfa, Assistant Deputy IG Administration Police Peter Pamba and Silale MCA Nelson Lotela came under ambush by suspected Turkana  in Kalpat area in Nadome while disembarking from a police helicopter.

Kaindi was leading the security team in a visit to the area where over 66 people were killed during Monday’s gun fight.

There are however conflicting numbers of those who died, with the Kenya Red Cross officials saying 75 people have been killed in four days of cattle raids and revenge attacks in the areas.

Intelligence reports from Baringo County indicate more than 100 people were killed in the attacks.

Villagers said the raiders, who struck the village at 4am, escaped with more than 3,000 goats towards Lomelo in Turkana East.

The raid then ignited fighting at the border of Turkana and East Pokot, leading to the deaths.

Wednesday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery said the Government had kicked off a disarmament exercise in the area as well as a process to identity and arrest culprits.

He also announced that he and other security officials would visit Nadome Thursday in a bid to establish the number of those killed in the attacks.
