‘Gor Hooligans’ take violence to a new level in Machakos town

Local News

Damaged car

All roads were leading to Governor Mutua’s town, Machakos, on Sunday, for the match between Gor Mahia and Sofapaka. Nothing deterred Nairobians from making it to the Kenyatta stadium; not even the Standard Chartered Marathon that saw Mombasa road closed for the better part of the day.

Adorned with attires that stamped their allegiance to their teams, hundreds of fans streamed into the stadium.

However, all hell broke loose when the match ended with Gor Mahia losing to Sofapaka by one goal.

Rowdy fans took to the streets to protest the match. Majority of Machakos town folks had closed down their businesses as a safety precaution. Unfortunately that did not stop the damage incurred to many businesses. Property worth millions was destroyed among them a saloon car and mortobike that were torched.

Frustrated residents who had attended the match assisted the police in putting an end to the destruction.

Kenyans took it to twitter to condemn the act going by the hashtag #Gorholigans

@montix_morgan: #GorHooligans should be given a complete ban everywhere...

@realoyungapala: #GorHooligans I am patient with stupidity but not with people who are proud of it. As they say, stupidity has a knack of getting its way.

@MorayJG: Gor shouldn't just pay for the perennial damages #GorHoligans cause. Make them pay for heavy security. Make it a very costly affair for them

@GodfreyKiragu: #GorHooligans Gor should join Somali league so they can play alshabaab side we see whether they are a match. Disgrace to the beautiful game!

‏@AtonyaStanley:  There's no investor who'd want their brand associated with hooligans. Image matters! #GorHooligans

‏@thehutproperty: Am thinking #GorMahia will never win the league unless the #GorHooligans stop spilling blood innocent people #itsacurse to the #team

‏@PeterScoffield: Gor 'fans' are not fans, they are a bunch of thugs #GorHooligans

@rchmaina: #GorHooligans Gor Mahia fans need to style up. They are spoiling the fun of the game.

@MYuvenalis: #GorHooligans to ban them for life could do better, nobody wants madness on the field and elsewhere!

@Obkerry: We used to teach our children to fight evil now we teach them that fighting is evil. #GorHooligans
