TSC, KNUT and KUPPET told to end salary deadlock

Nairobi, Kenya: Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has urged Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and teachers’ unions to resolve their differences to avert a strike.

Prof Kaimenyi said both parties should come up with agreeable figures based on their discussions under the consultation committee.

“Have they first consulted with Treasury to know if the funds were factored into this year’s budget? What teachers are asking for is too much considering the country’s economic situation,” said Kaimenyi.

He added the ministry was not in a position to interfere with the ongoing consultations between TSC, Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet).

“The Salaries and Remuneration Commission, which is a constitutional commission, is mandated to set and regularly review the remuneration and benefits of all State officers. It has a consultation committee, which should work closely with unions and other commissions to improve the welfare of workers,” he said.
