Gunmen open fire at a moving car killing two

MERU, KENYA: Two people died when the car they were traveling in was sprayed with bullets on Monday, along Meru-Chuka Road, police have said.

Confirming the incident on Monday, South Imenti Deputy County Commissioner Joseph Kisangau said the victims car was shot at, after which it veered off the road and rolled several times. The attackers escaped in the direction of Chuka, Tharaka Nithi county.

Kisangau said investigations were underway to establish identity of the killers and the motive. "We are yet to identify the deceased as they had no identification documents on them when the shooting occurred. Details of the assailants are also unknown as of now," said Mr Kisangau on phone.

He said preliminary findings showed that the dead men were more likely trailed from Meru town towards Chuka after which they were attacked. The police are working to identify the attackers.

"Reports from witnesses present during the shooting say that the attacker's vehicle tried to overtake them and then moved closer before opening fire," he said.

Curious onlookers jammed the area to have a look. Police officers towed the mangled wreck of the bullet-riddled vehicle to the Nkubu Police station.

The bodies were taken to the Meru Level Five Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.
