Police in crisis meeting over ‘White Widow’ Samantha Lewthwaite

Lamu, Kenya: Police bosses in Lamu held a crisis meeting following revelations that some junior officers had in April this year offered armed escort for a mysterious white woman in a vehicle that was used to attack and kill two Kenya Defence Forces soldiers last week.

Local County Commander Leonard Omollo confirmed his officers had offered an escort to a woman in the area but the documents she produced did not show she was a wanted woman.

“The documents do not show she was the Samantha you are talking about,” said Omollo on the phone.

Omollo visited Kiunga, Mukokoni and Mukowe Monday as part of efforts to get facts on the issue.

He said he is investigating to know if indeed the woman intended to visit KDF troops in Ras Kamboni, Somalia and had used the vehicle as alleged.

Investigations show the same Toyota Land Cruiser registration number KAV 599E was between April 15 and 22 used by a white woman who hired it seeking to cross the Kenya-Somalia border to visit KDF troops in Ras Kamboni.

But after making several attempts at the main border point, the immigration and KRA officials denied them entry to Somalia.

And after failing to cross to Somalia with the vehicle, the woman who many now suspect could be the “White Widow” British-born Samantha Lewthwaite vanished.
