Former presidential aspirant Nazlin Umar's case to be finalised by December

A former presidential aspirant in the 2007 general election has been ordered to stop filing further submissions in a case where she is accused of car theft.

Justice Isaac Lenaola said Nazlin Umar's case has taken too long and should be concluded. "This matter has taken almost five years to determine. There is urgent need for it to be finalised this year," said Lenaola.

The case will be heard on December 10. Ms Umar is accused of stealing vehicles and mobile phones from Tariq Hussein between April 24 and July 7, 2009. She allegedly stole three unregistered Range Rover vehicles worth Sh21 million.

Yesterday, she gave her final submissions and will be cross-examined in December. It is alleged the vehicles had been imported from Britain and Umar had received them and was expected to sell them on behalf of Mr Hussein.

NUMBER PLATES

Police also accused her of stealing vehicle number plates and mobile phones worth Sh750,000 belonging to Mahmood Rehmat Khan on June 12, 2009, at a Shell petrol station on Valley Road, Nairobi.

She is also accused of stealing motor vehicle number plates for a vehicle whose registration number was KBE 807V, and two mobile phones valued at Sh75,000.

She also allegedly stole a certificate of insurance for a car owned by Kilimani Motors. In 2009 she denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Stella Muketi and was granted a Sh400,000 bail.
