AFC Leopards edged out Mathare United 3-2 in this GOtv shield pre-quarter match played at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

Noah Wafula opened the scores for Leopards in the fourth minute before adding another one just three minutes later as the GOtv shield champions got off to a brighter start.

On the other side of the pitch, Mathare United kept up the pressure with Harrison Mwendwa forcing Patrick Matasi to a brilliant save.

It came on the half-hour mark when James Situma scored an own goal while trying to clear a danger.

After that it was an almost balanced affair with each team giving as much as they received.

Then came a heavy downpour which interfered with play.

Thika United were the better side in a water-logged pitch and got more chances at goal as their players preferred to shoot from far.

Trouble almost broke in the stadium before the start of the second half as retired referee GMT Ottieno was attacked by fans who thought he had ordered the officials to discontinue the match.

When the centre referee came back for the second half, they surveyed the pitch and ordered the match be called off but the fans would have none of it.

After a while, however, it was decided that the match continues.

Mathare United got on the score sheet first with Edwin Mambasa beating Patrick Matasi with a long shot.

Charles Okwemba however saved the blushes for Leopards with an 80th minute header which sent the fans into a frenzy.

In a Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match in Nyando, Chemelil Sugar’s attacking midfielder Hamisi Mwinyi missed a golden opportunity in the opening minutes as his team settled for a barren against Western Stima.

The thrilling encounter was officiated by Nairohi-based referee Nasur Doka was halted the match for about 14 minutes due to a heavy downpour.

Western Stima fought back gallantly but Wesley Kemboi and Job Omuse missed two scoring chances.

In Mombasa, Bandari’s relegation threats continued yesterday after they drew nil-nil with City Stars in a KPL match at the Mombasa County Stadium.

The dockers did not deserve three points as they played without purpose allowing their opponents to dominate the match.

Bandari’s strikers failed to click at the frontline in the match officiated by Amos Ichingwa.

Bandari’s moment of scoring came in the 20th minute but Shaban Kenga failed to beat Majani after dodging defender Oscar Mbugua.
