Former President Moi condoles with Gen Jackson Mulinge's family

Kenya: Former President Daniel Moi has mourned the death of General (Rtd) Jackson Mulinge.

Moi, in his message, said he had learnt of Mulinge's death with profound sense of loss.

He said he had known Mulinge for many years and described him as one of the bravest and professional soldiers the country has ever produced.

"Due to his professionalism, loyalty and steadfastness, Mulinge rose through the ranks from a private to be Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces in the country," Moi said.

He said during Mulinge's 44 years in service as a soldier, he exhibited fine qualities, which inspired those under him and those who wanted to make a career in the force.

Mulinge, who served under the founding President Jomo Kenyatta and President Moi succesfully, crushed two attempted coup de tats.

In 1972, he quelled an attempt by civilians and politicians to overthrow President Kenyatta and also in 1982, he saved the country from going to the dogs when he quelled yet another coup and helped President Moi back to power after a section of the military's air wing soldiers attempted to overthrow the government.

"I pray to God to give the family of Mulinge necessary fortitude to bear the loss," said Moi.

Mulinge was the longest serving head of Kenya Armed Forces and first Kenyan military officer to be awarded the rank of full general.

He was CGS between November 1978 to 1986.
