Fresh ethnic clashes erupt in Moyale

KENYA:Fresh ethnic clashes have erupted in Moyale town paralysing business.

Two warring communities clashed for hours Monday shutting down the town. Schools within the town centre were closed immediately. A number of vehicles and motorbikes were vandalised during the flare-up while scores were injured.

Sources indicated five people were injured while unknown number, including teachers and students, were held hostage.

Rowdy youths

Moyale OCPD Nehemiah Lang’at said police have controlled the situation and freed teachers and students.

He added teachers and pupils from St Mary and Al Hudha primary schools and Moyale girls were rescued by police after rowdy youths surrounded the facilities.

Mr Lang’at said a contingent of security officers from General Service Unit, regular police and Administration Police were patrolling the town. Responding to the attack, Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Moyale branch directed teachers to vacate areas that are not safe.

Area Knut chair Golicha Abduba said teachers were affected most.
