Buruburu woman allegedly planned to have husband murdered

NAIROBI, KENYA: Police in Nairobi are investigating a case where a woman is alleged to have hired a hitman to kill her husband of four years.

The incident involving a woman from Nairobi’s Buruburu area who works at a power firm, comes after another woman from Zimmerman admitted at a Nairobi Court of plotting to have her husband murdered.

Police at the Buruburu Division arrested the woman on June 12 at the local shopping centre after she had paid a down payment of Sh10,000 to the would-be hitman. She had agreed to pay Sh150,000 for the mission.

The woman, 34, wanted her husband, who also happens to be working in the same company, eliminated and his body not found.

She also gave the would-be killer the picture of her husband to enable them identify him.

Outgoing Buruburu OCPD Hassan Barua and his CID counterpart Henry Kiambati confirmed the woman had been arrested over allegations of conspiracy to murder but she is yet to face the charges.

They said an inquiry was opened into the incident and that the woman was released on a cash bail.

“We will forward the investigation file to the Director of Public Prosecutions who will give us the way forward but for now investigations are ongoing and we are looking for more witnesses into the case for it to be tight,” said Barua.

Murder plot

The woman refused to pick our calls yesterday and did not respond to texts sent to her mobile phone.

According to police and the husband, the plot to murder the man started on June 2 when the woman approached two women and asked them on how she could get her husband eliminated. He said his wife told her two friends they were supposed to travel to Mombasa and spend the Madaraka Day weekend there.

“After the meeting in the house, one of the women known to the family as Mama Vanessa, went to her Dandora home and confessed to her husband what had been offered to her.

Mama Vanessa happened not to have a mobile phone and the woman offered her one, which she had been using. In the mobile phone were several messages that she had been exchanging with the husband and his mobile number.

The husband said Mama Vanessa’s husband offered to carry out the mission and posed as a hitman and called the woman for briefing.

“They negotiated from a fee of Sh500,000 to Sh150,000 for me to be eliminated. She did not want my body to be found,” he said.

After the two had agreed on the fee, the would-be hitman called the husband.  “The hitman got my contacts from the mobile phone that my wife offered his wife. It is through God’s grace,” he revealed.

He revealed he had moved from his house in fear of being killed. He said his wife came back to his house the day after her arrest in the company of police and picked up her belongings before she left.

“I have been to the station with my lawyer and family for a follow-up on the issue and police say they are still investigating it,” said the husband.
