India-based Bharti Airtel has announced a 56 per cent increase in non-voice revenues, a reflection of its solid performance in nearly all aspects of its business.

Business grew by 29 per cent in Africa with the overall customer base across 20 countries in which it operates standing at Sh262.6m. The firm also announced an increase of 21 per cent in customers across the continent and corresponding 56 per cent increase in non-voice revenues.

“Amidst intensified competitive pressures, Airtel has continued to keep its prime focus on leading the market development through network, expansion and affordable pricing,” said the company.

The announcement coincided with the local affiliate’s disclosure that it has invested over Sh8.5 billion in support of its network expansion in urban and rural Kenya for voice, Internet services and mobile commerce in the last two years.

“This investment, coupled with the affordability model has played a significant role in the increase in mobile penetration in Kenya wish currently stands at 75 per cent, up from 46 per cent two years ago,” said Shivan Bhargava, CEO, Airtel Kenya.

Chairman and Managing Director, Bharti Airtel Sunil Bharti Mittal, said despite challenges, overall revenue growth was sustained.
