Kenya Defence Forces’ Gladys Chemweno and new cross-country entrant Isaack Korir blew away a crowded field to win this year’s Chepkoilel University College cross-country in Eldoret yesterday.

Chemweno, the 2010 cross-country jackpot overall winner, regained her cross-country running form after almost two years to take the senior women’s 8km crown.

The cross-country specialist broke away from the leading field after running shoulder to shoulder with Stacy Ndiwa, who hang on to take  second position ahead of third placed Gladys Kemboi.

She stopped the time at 26:33.2 after running against a strong midday wind in the open course to become the 20th edition winner.

“I have just started my cross-country training. I am happy my body is responding well. I hope to be in the national cross-country team next year. I would be happy to go back to Poland,” said Chemweno, who competed for the country in Bydgoszcz in 2010.

Ndiwa, who chased Chemweno throughout the race, ran out of steam and was beaten to second place, timing 26:44.7 while upcoming Gladys Kemboi chalked 27:25.2 for third in the newly-designed course weavened around the track.

Jescah Chemutai, Naomi Maiyo and Magdaline Masai were fourth, fifth and sixth, clocking 27:37.5, 27:38.5 and 27:42.1 in the race flagged of by 800 metres great Janeth Jepkosgei aka Eldoret Express.

In senior men’s 12km, Kenya Prisons Officer Isaack Korir raced to victory.

The lanky Korir, who hails from Kapenguria, but is stationed in Kisumu, won after controlling the race and won in 34:14.6 ahead of John Chepkwony who recorded 34:26.7.

In Mwatate, Paul Kinyanjui overcame tough challenge to win the seventh edition of the Safaricom Madoka 21km road race at the Ngerenyi Farmers Training Centre.

Kinyanjui, 23, who trains at Embakasi Athletics Club, Nairobi crossed the finishing tape to win in 1:08.48 seconds.

“It was a tough race, but I thank God I won,” said Kinyanjui who pocked Sh100,000. He said he faced tough challenge in the sloppy route.

Dominic Kimwetich timed 1:08.49 for the second slot while Panuel Mkungo, the only local to finish among the top 10, clocked 1:09.02 for the third slot. Others were Anthony Maritim (1:09.18), Hosea Nailel (1:09.23), Festus Talam (1:09.25), Stephen Sirima (1:09.29), Josephat Kamzee (1:09.46), Charles Ogai (1:10.12) and Patrick Ngwatu (1:10.54).

In women’s 21km race, Mildred Chebosis of Rongai Club, Nairobi was the winner.

“I had prepared well for the race. I did face stiff challenge from my competitors. The weather was good,” said Chebosis after winning the race with a time of one hour 20.33 seconds.

Penina Kigen who entered as individual was second after clocking 1:21.03 while Isabellah Boribori who participate in the Fukuoka marathon was third with a time of 1:21.28.
