High Court lifts ban on MRC

The High Court has lifted the ban on the Mombasa Republican Council saying the move was unconstitutional.

A three judge bench sitting in Mombasa however warned MRC to stop agitating for secession saying such act was not enshrined in the constitution.

The judges stated in their ruling that their decision should not be seen as an endorsement for secession and added that the same could only be achieved by far reaching amendments to the Constitution.

The three judges, Justices John Mwera, Francis Tiuiyot and Mary Kasango advised the group to form a political party to front their agenda.

Members of MRC had moved to court to challenge a government notice that outlawed them.
