State launches e-learning model classroom

Primary and Secondary school students received a major boost in information, communication and technology, thanks to the launch of a new model classroom that will embrace e-learning.

The new model classroom launched in the dynamic centre will demonstrate best practices in curriculum delivery for schools using modern technology.

Education Minister Mutula Kilonzo said the model classroom is designed to adapt to technological changes in the delivery of education in line with the Millennium Development Goals.

"This model demonstrates how ICT can give schools the option of teaching children as individuals, small groups and will provide electronic links to other schools and facilities in the country and the region," said Mutula.

The minister made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf by his assistant minister Ayiecho Olweny at Kenya Institute of Education (KIE) in Nairobi on Thursday.

Mutula challenged teachers to embrace modern technology as the new model classroom seeks to demonstrate flexibility and was durable.

The model classroom is a joint partnership of KIE, Microsoft and LG Corporation.

Students will also benefit from a Windows based-solution provided by Microsoft and LG that uses a single host computer to power multiple simultaneous and independent user stations in the education system.

This technology will help schools save the cost of purchasing computers by 60 per cent and raise the number of computer access and knowledge.

KIE Director, Lydia Nzomo, said they had developed digital curriculum support materials for primary and secondary schools based on the national curriculum.

She said the development of e-learning content is designed and can be delivered using ordinary computer systems; web based for online access and mobile phones.
