Matiang’i asked to clarify whether October 10 will be a public holiday

Senior Counsel Paul Muite on Wednesday asked Interior CS Fred Matiang’i to clarify whether October 10, 2018, will be a public holiday.

The lawyer underlined the importance of proper communication before the material day for planning purposes.

“In the light of these Orders by the Hon Mr Justice Odunga, can the C.S in charge, Hon Matiang'i clarify to the Public ASAP whether or not 10th October 2018 will be a Public Holiday to help people to plan,” wrote Muite.

On November 6, 2017, Justice George Odunga noted that scrapping of the holiday by the government was an illegality and contravention of section 2 (1) as read with part 1 of the Schedule to the Public Holidays Act.

He further ordered that: “unless and until parliament amends schedule 1 of the Public Holidays Act, or the minister substitutes the same for another date, the 10th of October in each year shall continue being a public holiday.”

Odunga, however, clarified that it was not up to the court to prescribe the manner in which the day is to be celebrated.

Moi Day was removed from the list of national holidays following the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution.

October 10, 2018, will be on a Wednesday and Kenyans are eager to know whether they will rest or go to work as usual.
