Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has proposed an amendment to the elections act of 2012 with an intention of scraping off section 22 which requires those aspiring to be members of parliament or members of the county assembly in the coming general election to have a university degree in order to be eligible. According to the amendment bill, the only requirement for MPs and mca’s to contest for the elective positions should be the ability to read and write in English or Kiswahili language or literacy in Kenyan sign language. and as our senior political affairs reporter Chris Thairu now tells us, deputy president William Ruto has already promised the proponents of the amendments that he will marshal support in parliament to ensure the law is suspended.
