River Auji, an inlet of Lake Victoria rehabilitated by local youth and leadership

19th February, 2021

SAVING THE RIVERS By Washington Onyango, Kisumu Bureau

Nyalenda MCA Joseph Olale engages youth in Nyalenda Slum in Kisumu in the removal of water hyacinth and plastic wastes in River Auji, an inlet river into Lake Victoria.

Olale believes cleaning of the inlet rivers will help clear the blockages, desilting the river and help prevent the pollution of Lake Victoria which has recently led to the death of fish.

The project, which provides youths with employment, will last for the next three months as a form of trial to control the hyacinth and prevent pollution of both the river and the lake.
