"Without my family, I would be long dead," recounts David Ogot who was an alcoholic

31st October, 2020

David Ogot is a well known personality in Kenya, not just because he is a scion of prominent parents. He had to overcome great obstacles to become a renowned motivational speaker and addiction counsellor. The first born son of historian, Prof Bethuel Allan Ogot and former Gem Member of Parliament, Grace Ogot, Ogot was only a teenager when he started abusing alcohol. It would take a toll on him to a point he could not even complete his university studies in India. Although he has won the battle against alcohol, he still considers himself an alcoholic. Indeed he suffered a relapse in 2001 but it has been a relatively smooth ride since then. He credits his wife and children and his parents for saving him from the fangs of alcohol. Ogot now has a new passion, fighting for the recognition of alcoholism as an illness for which no one should be treated harshly without being given a chance to heal. "Instead of an alcoholics being fired from their jobs, they should be sent to (hospital) rehabilitation centre for treatment," he explains.
