The Kuria's culture of building their homes with a single entrance and a cowshed at the center

31st October, 2020

The Kuria community have a very peculiar way of building their homes. With a single entrance and the cowshed right at the centre of the compound. Houses in Kuria are constructed closely together leaving no gap between one house to the other due to security reasons. According to Mr.James Mogochi, the culture originated many years back when cattle raids were rampant among the Kuria community and it's neighbouring communities. The raiders would raid their homesteads and make away with hundreds heads of cattle which forced the Kuria community to come up with a solution. They therefore resorted to building their homes with a single entrance, a cowshed at the center and windows on the inside part of the homes.
