Exactly a year ago President Uhuru accidentally begun a political movement, Tanga Tanga |REWIND

Exactly one year ago on this day, President Uhuru Kenyatta unknowingly launched the much-hyped political movement, team ‘Tanga Tanga’. During a rally in Emakasi East where they had launched where he had launched the Nairobi Regeneration Program, Uhuru said Ruto likes roaming around during the weekends and that if Kenyans would see anything going amiss in their area, they should then alert him to act upon it.

“Hii kijana anaitwa Ruto unajua kila wikendi anatangatanga kila pahali. Atakuwa anapitia hizi machochoro. Akiona kitu inaenda konakona mmwambie. Tuhakikishe kazi ya wananchi imefanyika (This young man called Ruto, you know he likes roaming everywhere every weekend. He will be passing through these routes. If he sees anything that’s not going well, tell him. We have to make sure citizen duties are fulfilled),” said President Uhuru.

Fast forward, the term Tanga Tanga has morphed into a vibrant movement, a team alilied to Deputy President William Ruto. This is the group within the ruling Jubilee Party that has made it its core mandate to defend DP Ruto, insisting on a 2013 agreement that he would be the party’s automatic flag-bearer and President Kenyatta’s successor come 2022.

Currently Jubilee is seemingly divided into two, Team Tanga Tanga and Kieleweke. Kikuyu Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu coined the word Kieleweke himself and is believed to be loyal to President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Team 'Kieleweke' has consistently asked their rivals "Tanga Tanga", to reconsider its stand on pledges made to spearhead development programmes before 2022.

As the battle for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s succession is taking shape, the rift between Team Kieleweke and Team Tanga Tanga is growing bigger each and every day.

A section of those allied to DP Ruto have been crying foul, saying they are being targeted for supporting Ruto’s 2022 presidential ambitions.
