The ‘race’ to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta as Mt Kenya region’s next kingpin has gathered momentum albeit at the grass root level.

With President Uhuru in his second and last term in office going to the 2022 General elections, several politicians have either expressed their desire or taken political moves that have suggested that they want to be the next kingpin of the vote-rich region.

They include but not limited to Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria, Gatundu South lawmaker Moses Kuria, Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri and former MP Peter Kenneth.

Banking on our history with retired Presidents, there has been a paradigm shift in terms of the populace of a particular region politically ganging behind a different leader.

In 2002 when the then President Daniel Moi left office, the Rift Valley region slowly but eventually settled on now DP William Ruto. In 2013 when Kibaki was leaving office, the Mt Kenya region quickly and seamlessly settled on now President Uhuru Kenyatta. In 2022, we expect history to repeat and a different politician to be ‘crowned’ kingpin of Mt Kenya region.

With President Uhuru still youthful as some political commentators have argued-however, there has been a notion that he may still be active in Central Kenya politics even after his retirement and exit from office.

Lawyer-cum-political analyst Kipchumba Karoli does not see this ensuing, insisting that those who hold the ideas are lying to the President.
