Successful shift from Coffee to Hass Avocado farming

25, Jan 2019

Anne Wangechi, A Horticulture Farmer narrates what made her shift from Coffee farming to Avocado.  Unlike coffee trees, Anne said, avocado trees require little maintenance, and their fruit is a good earner. Farmers in Kenya are switching coffee and tea for avocados in a bid to profit from increasing European demand. Fact: Hass avocado is mainly cultivated by both small scale and large scale farmers in Kenya. Kenya produces an estimate of 115,000 metric tonnes of avocado per year. 70% of this is grown by small-scale farmers.
