Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has set Friday for the day when he will name a nominee to the position of Deputy Governor, a slot that has been vacant for just under a year.

The seat fell vacant on January 12, 2018 when then Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe tendered his resignation citing a failure to earn the governor’s trust.

Prior to Mr Igathe’s resignation the governor dismissed media reports which had hinted at a souring of relations between the two who had mounted a show of unity in multiple public forums.

Mr Sonko took issue with such media reports terming them as an attempt by his political opponents to sidetrack his focus.

Shortly after the denial, Igathe posted parts of his resignation communique to his social media platform.

“Without fear, favour or ill will I step down to avoid abusing or betraying my oath of office to Kenyans, Nairobians and my family,” Igathe said via his Twitter account.

Still in 2018, Sonko then nominated opposition politician Miguna Miguna to fill the slot.

Mr Miguna Miguna had been critical of the government and specifically President; so much so that he was deported from the country on account of failing to present a valid Kenyan passport to immigration officials.

His nomination was rejected by the Nairobi County Assembly speaker Beatrice Elachi.

The post of Deputy Governor has been vacant since.

At the same time, Governor Sonko stated that he will be reshuffling his cabinet to ensure smooth delivery of services to the residents of Nairobi County.
