Crisis averted at Kenya Railways footbridge as matatu CBD ban temporarily lifted

4th December, 2018

Nairobi residents received a reprieve Tuesday morning as Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko lifted a ban on matatus entering the CBD.

In the hours after the enforcement of the ban on Monday morning, residents were forced to walk for kilometers to their respective destinations.

In the evening hours however, footage of people scrambling to get off the Kenya Railways footbridge that connects Landi Mawe to the CBD emerged.

In the video, audible creaks could be heard from the old footbridge as hundreds of Nairobi residents made their way to various destinations.

Kenya Railways released a statement urging pedestrians not to crowd the footbridge as it was constructed to withstand a lesser load capacity.

The ban on matatus entering the CBD has since been lifted averting what could have been a crisis for the moment.
