Sugar export talks: Millers propose sugar exportation

23rd October, 2018

Now the ghost of contraband sugar remains haunting many consumers who to date, are yet to be assured of the safety of the sweetener, especially following the nabbing of tones of contraband sugar a few months ago. **** Now The Managing Director of Butali Sugar Mills Ltd. Jayandi Patel says Kenya can start exporting local sugar to the international market should the government come up with new regulations to guide the sugar sector, ensure millers pay farmers on time and that only mature cane is harvested. Patel also wants the government to check on the importation of sugar saying irregular importation and dumping of sugar in the local market could result in the closure of private mills.  The Butali sugar company boss has also called for the reintroduction of sugar development levy.
