The Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi today made an unprecedented move when he led members of the powers and privileges committee to inspect ladies lavatories at parliament buildings to verify claims that MPs received bribes in toilets to shoot down a controversial report on poisonous contraband sugar.
Last month, Kiambu woman representative Gathoni Wamuchomba told the committee that she overheard fellow MPs discussing how they were bribed by Wajir woman representative Fatima Gedi to vote against the sugar report. She, however, said that she did not identify them as they went silent and did not come out of the cubicles until she left. But when Gedi appeared before the committee, she denied bribing members. Members of the powers and privileges committee were to visit the washrooms last week but shelved the plan last minute under unclear circumstances. Journalists were blocked from accessing the toilets during the fact-finding mission which lasted almost ten minutes.
