President Uhuru Kenyatta proposes increase in mobile money transfer tax

19th September, 2018

President Uhuru Kenyatta has proposed an increase in tax from 12 percent to 20 percent for mobile transfer platforms. These include Safaricom, Telkom, Airtel, money transfer agencies, banks and other financial institutions. Due to the growth in consumers using mobile money transfers in the past couple of years, the fee charged will be more than excisable value. The move aims to raise a further sh25.7 billion on tax revenue for the 2018/19 financial year.
