Ugandan government imposes USh. 200 tax to control gossip on Social Media

2nd July, 2018

Uganda’s government has imposed Ush. 200 daily tax on social-media use, making such platforms like WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook and Skype inaccessible for users who hadn't paid the tax.

Uganda’s government had earlier in February 2016 blocked the internet during elections, ostensibly for security purposes. The Social Media Tax has been designed to curb gossip online and raise billions of shillings in government revenue.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni had complained that idle talk on social media was costing the country much-needed time and income.
