Athi River causing fears of flooding as water levels rise

17th May, 2018

The fast-rising water levels of Athi River have raised concerns of flooding to neighbouring areas.

The river cuts across the Mombasa-Nairobi highway and connects Nairobi, Kajiado and Machakos counties.

Motorists using the road are especially at risk as the country continues to experience torrential floods resulting from heavy rainfall.

Over 100 people have lost their lives following flooding that has been experienced since March when the long rains season began.

Solai dam in Subukia, Nakuru County burst its walls on May 9 flooding settlements in the area. Over 40 people died in the incident, most of them children.

The Meteorological department  has said the rains are expected to continue to the end of May leading to the government cautioning people living in risk areas to move to higher grounds.
