Makerere University suspended a senior administrator in April – the move coming just days after a Kenyan female student blew the lid on alleged sexual harassment going on at the institution.
In a letter announcing the administrator’s suspension, Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof William Bazeyo acknowledged receipt of a sexual harassment complaint lodged by the student.
The female student reportedly filed a complaint with the local law enforcement, where she shared a selfie capturing the university official in a compromising position – a photo she says she took as evidence of the harassment.
The photo and story went viral, prompting a broader debate about sexual harassment in tertiary institutions. VOA’s Halima Athumani speaks with students from the institution about sexual harassment, examining whether this is Uganda’s #MeToo movement.
