Social network giant Facebook has had a turbulent first quarter of 2018.

As had been the norm for a time, the company started off the year with an increase in share price since being listed on Nasdaq stock market in May 2012.

In the six-year span, the company has seen an increase of 334% in share price on the stock exchange.

The stellar run has however been hit after a damning revelation that external actors had breached the data and used the platform to influence the 2016 US presidential elections made headlines.

Cambridge Analytica, a data analysis and data mining company that operates as a subsidiary of Strategic Communication Laboratories, acquired the date of 87 million Facebook users in the US in the run up to the 2016 presidential elections.

Through crafting and targeting communications via Facebook, CA sent misleading messages to voters that are believed to have influenced the outcome of the polls.

This has affected the company's share price experiencing a 7% drop on the stork market in March.
