FGM and access to alcohol hindering transitional rate from primary to secondary schools in Embu

22nd January, 2018

Female genital mutilation (FGM) and easy access to alcohol and illicit brews have been termed as the major hurdles hindering transitional rate from primary to secondary schools among students in embu county. Cabinet secretary for public service and gender Sicily Kariuki says that the two vices have impacted negatively on the education sector in the county as well as frustrating government efforts on free day secondary school program which is being implemented countrywide. Speaking in Embu, Kariuki expressed concern that bars open for business as early as 8.00am contrary to the alcoholic drinks control act of 2010. She also noted that many bars are near schools whis is against the provisions of the same law. Kariuki condenmed the continued observation of the outlawed culture of female genital mutilation especially in Mbeere region where it is done in secret..
