Bottomline Africa: EU debates Kenya

16th January, 2018

The European Union today debates Kenya’s political crisis following the 2017 controversial general election that saw president Uhuru Kenyatta re-elected into office. According to the head of the EU observer mission to Kenya Mariette Schaake the debate is centered on an election report released in Brussels  , Belgium. The report was released in the wake of calls by the Kenyan government for a postponement to March 2018. Schaake, however, declined to shelve the release to a later date saying this goes against a memorandum of understanding between Kenya and the observation mission. The Kenyan government has since termed the release unprocedural, disdainful and condescending.
