Kenya ports authority is set to start the construction of a new offshore crude oil and refined fuel jetty to handle larger tankers. The terminal whose construction begins in 2017 will have a crude oil pipeline connecting it with the Changamwe-based Kenya petroleum refineries ltd. KPA managing director Catherine Muturi says the jetty is expected to increase efficiency in delivery of imported refined fuel for Kenya’s domestic use and export to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the democratic republic of Congo. This means the Kipevu oil terminal will be relocated to an offshore site to allow offloading of tankers with a capacity of 170,000 tons to improve port efficiency and meet the region's growing demand for refined oil products. Built in 1963, and with only one berth handling tankers carrying up to 80,000 metric tons of imported refined fuel, Kipevu oil terminal lacks the capacity to meet the growing regional demand for oil products estimated at 450 million liters monthly.
