In 2014, Kenya acquired lower middle income economy status after it rebased the economy. This meant that the country changed its global ranking from a least developing country to a developing country. This ranking is now a major cause for grief for Kenya, as various categories of goods exported to the European Union require payment of various taxes unless the economic partnership agreement or EPA with the east Africa community is finalized.
