Former URP secretary general and chairman Sports Kenya Board Fred Muteti will contest for Makueni governorship in the year 2017. Speaking during the burial of a local politician Joel Mbithi Muthoka at Kalamba village in Makueni, Muteti said he would be on the race to unseat the incumbent Prof Kivutha Kibwana.  He said that Jubilee party will have candidates in all seats around the country with Makueni not exceptional a clear hit that he would be the one to carry the mantle.
