The Kenya Tea Development Agency has today announced its bonus distribution plans, boiling down to ksh. 50.26 per kilogram to be delivered to farmers affiliated to KTDA factories. Speaking during the annoucement, KTDA’s group CEO, Lerionka Tiampati, stated a total bonus of ksh 61.99 billion will be paid out to smallholder tea farmers this year which is 75% the half year’s revenues worth ksh 84 billion; the highest amount in ktda’s history. Tiampati adds that leaf volume and price has resulted in a disparity in the bonus distribution among various regions such as a 12.74 billion shilling bonus in the Thika/ Kiambu region as compared to a ksh 7.43 billion bonus in the Kisii region.the 32% increase from last year’s total turnover is attributed to the el- nino rains, which allegedly boosted crop volumes and overall sales, as well as stable exchange rates.
